Can I Clean My Fire Damage Myself?

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke damaged room Please call SERVPRO of E. Vancouver / Clark Co. 24/7/365 days a year! (360) 254-0049

After a fire, your house is left with lingering smoke that can be harmful to your health and property. The best thing to do in such a situation is to clean smoke immediately because if you ignore it, the smoke will cause massive damage on your property which will require more money to clean than if you had cleaned it soon enough. If the smoke is not cleaned as soon as possible, the items that will be mostly affected by smoke are drapes, carpets, upholstery and walls because they will become permanently discolored. Glass will become extremely etched, and metals will tarnish which will require replacement.

You might think that you can do a good job at cleaning smoke by yourself without any basic knowledge and skills on how to go about it but this can lead to you causing further damage on the items. The best thing to do will be to hire experienced SERVPRO professionals to do the cleaning and restore the home to the state it was in before the fire disaster struck.

One of the advantages of using SERVPRO experts to clean soot is that we have specialized tools which are crucial in eliminating smoke. These are tools such as extractors, rotary scrubbers, and wet cleaning tools. Another advantage is that we have a lot of experience in doing such work; therefore, we will know the right steps to take in cleaning your home and preventing further damage on your property.

Indeed, bringing in a SERVPRO professional on site will save you a lot of headaches and ensure that you get rid of smoke and fire damage efficiently.

How Does Pretesting Lower Claims Cost?

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

Flooded commercial building Call us for pretesting so we can save you money!

Learn More About Pretesting

Pretesting can determine the extent of damage by identifying traces of damage that may not be immediately apparent. Learn more about three ways that preliminary testing can result in a more accurate estimate and lower insurance claim.

1. Determine the Full Extent of Damage

A visual inspection may not be the best method for determining how much damage a property has sustained, particularly from soot or smoke. One of the most common preliminary testing methods is wiping down surfaces or contents with a chemical sponge. This can allow mitigation and restoration professionals to make more informed estimates with regard to how much of a home must be cleaned or restored.

2. Accurately Allocate Equipment and Experts

Pretesting can also be useful for anticipating which types of equipment and professional expertise will be necessary on a job site. If damage affects the majority of a structure, the duration of cleanup and restoration may also be longer than if only a limited area requires treatment.

3. Safely Limit Cleanup and Restoration

Homeowners and insurers run the risk of overlooking damage when they try to cut corners on an insurance claim for cleanup and restoration. This can lead to an incomplete job or secondary damage. Preliminary testing during an assessment can give all parties a clearer idea of the degree of damage and what will need to be cleaned, restored or rebuilt. This allows for a more complete estimate and reduces the risk of unexpected increases due to the discovery of further damage.

These are three ways that pretesting can be useful after a fire or other damage. A homeowner or insurance agent should contact a certified and trustworthy Preferred Vendor to ensure that damage is handled properly and cost-effectively, from the initial assessment to the final touches.

Restore VS. Replace

11/13/2020 (Permalink)

Crew member in van with bandana face covering giving thumbs up Every item of yours is important and SERVPRO of East Vancouver/ Clark County will treat it as such.

The restore vs. replace mentality is one of the greatest assets SERVPRO of East Vancouver/ Clark County has when it comes to making it "Like it never even happened." It’s impossible to overstate the importance of keeping as many of the original items as possible.

This thinking allows prices to stay down as the cost for restoration is 20% of the cost for replacement. More importantly restoring is the preferred option because whether we realize it or not, the things in our homes, even the most arbitrary, have some kind of sentimental value. The blanket you always grab when you watch a movie, the plate you put your Thanksgiving turkey on or the couch your grandparents gave you.

Why SERVPRO is Your Best Bet No Matter What The Damage is in Your Community.

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Staff Photo No matter the loss... water, fire, storm, or mold we have the gear and will be right there.

The need for restoration services comes in many forms. Our emergency response team answers the call from residential and commercial properties after damage caused by water, fire, storm, and mold.

Water

The potential for a water damaged structure comes from many sources. Plumbing issues, water tank seal failures, and even human error such as not winterizing pipes resulting in leaks or forgetting a faucet was on and overflowing a sink or tub.

Once the water loss happens in the home or business, it becomes progressively more contaminated. If it remains in the house over 48-hours, the water requires handling as a category three biohazard. Another issue, often with home-based water cleanup is the problem of missed moisture. For example, when a water spill occurs in a kitchen, the water migrates and follows the path of least resistance. It races behind baseboards, under sub-flooring or within wall cavities. If excessive moisture remains in any of these places, symptoms such as warped and buckled sheet rock, musty odors or mold create secondary damages that require mitigation, often at additional cost.

Our certified technicians have access to state-of-the-art water extraction equipment that enables them to avoid costly secondary damage from inadequate water cleanup. After the water removal phase, we dry and disinfect the property. SERVPRO technicians work hard to return your home or to its preloss condition.

Water has its own characteristic musty smell, and odor control is a large part of mitigation after flood damage. Drying and disinfection often lower foul scents in the home substantially, but residual odors sometimes remain. When this occurs, our certified Odor Control Technicians get to work and neutralize any remaining reminders of the water loss in the home.

Fire

When fire damage occurs, it is vital to begin cleanup efforts as fast as possible to stop the spread of soot throughout the property. Containment is something that needs to occur as quickly as possible to halt the traveling of soot to currently unaffected areas. Most often, It involves sealing off doorways and vents with heavy gauge plastic. If the HVAC was on after the fire, we make a note to inspect the duct-work for cleaning after the fire debris cleanup.

Once we finish the removal of charred items and clean the smoke residue with our specialized methods and professional-grade formulas; we turn our attention to eradicating the smoke odor from affected furnishings in the home. Items like upholstered sofas and chairs, window treatments, and carpeting all have the potential to retain foul smoke odors.

Our technicians undergo extensive training for the removal of all types of odors. SERVPRO has equipment such as thermal foggers and hydroxyl generators that work to neutralize foul scents. In some cases, it is necessary to apply multiple methods for complete eradication of odors.

After the completion of fire damage mitigation, SERVPRO finalizes the restoration services with any needed duct-work cleaning. We thoroughly address everything from the vent covers to the HVAC unit to ensure it is free of smoke odors.

Mold

Mold spores are present everywhere. Mold damage occurs when conditions are right for mold spores to germinate and grow. A leaky pipe, hydrostatic water problems in a basement or poor ventilation are all common reasons a mold colony came into being.

When SERVPRO handles mold remediation, we use our moisture detection equipment to determine ensure we catch every place mold is active in the home.

Much like when we contain a room after fire damage to stop the spread of soot, mold spores become airborne and spread during mold remediation. Containment lessens the chances of mold spores setting up home in another area of the property.

Because mold is usually the result of a problem with either excessive moisture or ventilation, our Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians know the signs that create favorable conditions for mold growth.

Upon the completion of mold removal efforts, the technicians wrap the project with the following actions:

  • We determine the reason for the infestation
  • Recommendations for repairs to inhibit any further mold issues from occurring
  • Application of antimicrobial sealer where we performed colony removal

Why SERVPRO?

Our certified technicians commit to approaching each job we do for our local Clark County community with compassion and lessening loss from fire, mold, water, or storm damage. You cannot get professional quality restoration services results with subpar equipment. We use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques as taught through The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification, a non-profit organization that maintains the best practices for the cleaning and restoration industry.

fan drying out equipment The bottom line? SERVPRO of East Vancouver/ Clark County has the training and equipment to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychrometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. While your initial reaction maybe to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of East Vancouver/ Clark County is trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers the water damage, SERVPRO of East Vancouver/ Clark County will:

-Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.

-Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.

-Speed up mother nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does “speed up Mother Nature” mean? What building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to dryer air at the surface of the material but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

For this reason, SERVPRO of East Vancouver/ Clark County have been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help mother nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough to reach spaces inside walls, and much more. We also use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

3 Reasons a Fast Response to Commercial Mold Damage Is Important

Mold on a Commercial Property: Employ a Restoration Company

The impact of mold on a commercial property in Fern Prairie, WA, can be disastrous. There are a variety of reasons it’s often important to employ a restoration company that is faster to any size disaster.

1. Control Odor

One of the first signs of mold growth is often a musty odor. However, there are certain techniques and tools that are often required to bring the level of mold spores down to an appropriate level. If mold has spread to various areas in a building, it is likely that more time will be needed to remove the odor. The sooner a restoration company can arrive at the commercial property, the easier it will likely be to remove the odor.

2. Allow Items To Be Restored

It’s not always possible to restore items that are affected by mold. Since replacing an item is generally more expensive than restoring an item, the cost of the insurance claim is likely to increase if many items in the building are destroyed. Though a slow response will cause belongings to become more damaged, employing a company that’s faster to any size disaster will likely be able to restore more items thanks to the timely response.

3. Cut Down Costs

When mold is noticed in a commercial property, a business often has to temporarily close its doors, which can result in a financial loss for the business. Additionally, a slow response from a restoration company can cause mold to spread and cause extensive damage in different parts of a property. However, a business will likely be able to reopen quickly if a restoration company can respond in a timely manner, and a quick response can also decrease the amount of damage that occurs, therefore lowering the cost of restoration.

When a company responds quickly to a business affected by mold, the restoration process can be positively impacted. A restoration business that is faster to any size disaster can help control the odor from mold, assist in restoring items and can lower the costs of restoration.

3 Ways Pretesting Can Lower Claims

Learn More About Pretesting

Pretesting can determine the extent of damage at a residence in Brush Prairie, WA. This testing method can identify traces of damage that may not be immediately apparent.

These are three ways that pretesting can be useful after a fire or other damage at a residence in Brush Prairie, WA. A homeowner or insurance agent should contact a certified and trustworthy Preferred Vendor to ensure that damage is handled properly and cost-effectively, from the initial assessment to the final touches.

Why Does Mold Keep Growing In the Same Place?

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Mold remediation in Cascade Place,WA

Mold mitigation is intended to get rid of active growth and reduce spore levels to prevent mold from reforming. If mold returns in the same place, the underlying cause has not been resolved. It is necessary to address the factors that lead to mold growth.

Moisture Remains Available

Mold will regrow in the same place if sufficient levels of moisture are present. Some of the most common recurring or persistent causes of excessive moisture include:

  • Condensation
  • High humidity levels
  • Poor ventilation
  • Leaky pipes or roofing
  • Water damage

It may be necessary to take measures to seal the building envelope to keep out moisture. You may also want to use a dehumidifier to lower the level of ambient moisture in the air.

Nutriment Remains Available

Mold also requires a food source in order to thrive. This nutriment often comes in the form of cellulose. These plant fibers are found in:

  • Carpet
  • Drywall
  • Insulation
  • Paper
  • Wood

If a porous material has been exposed to mold, it will probably need to be torn out and replaced. Cleaning mold growth off of a porous surface will not eliminate the underlying structure of colonies, and they may reemerge if favorable conditions persist.

Conditions Are Still Suitable

It may be necessary to take several measures to prevent mold from returning. In addition to getting rid of moisture and food sources, you may also need to:

  • Tear out and replace porous materials
  • Reduce humidity
  • Increase air circulation
  • Regularly clean the area
  • Use mold prevention treatments

These are several reasons why mold may grow in the same place and ways to stop regrowth. If you have already gone through mold mitigation at a commercial property in Cascade Place, WA, contact the service to report that mold growth has resumed. You may want to schedule an inspection with another full-service company that specializes in mold mitigation and water damage restoration.

4 Forms of Damage Your Business May Sustain During a Fire

11/21/2018 (Permalink)

Different Forms of Damage a Fire Can Cause to Your Building

A fire can be a devastating disaster for any business in Camas, WA. The extent of fire damage may depend on a variety of factors, including the size of the blaze and how quickly it is extinguished. Large infernos can cause significant destruction that may interrupt normal business operations. To complicate matters, a fire can cause several different forms of damage within your building.

1. Burned Objects

The most obvious form of destruction may be charred and incinerated objects. Office equipment, furniture, walls and flooring frequently suffer extensive harm during a business fire.

2. Soot Damage

Items not consumed by the blaze may be covered in soot. Fine soot particles can also infiltrate electronic devices and damage circuits and other sensitive internal components.

3. Lingering Smoke Odor

In addition to direct fire damage and soot residue, an obnoxious smoke odor may linger for an extended period. The smell may be challenging to eliminate because smoke particles often cling to upholstered furniture and settle inside small areas inside your office space, including HVAC ducts.

4. Water Damage

Water may be another culprit of damage. If the blaze is small and quickly contained, problems from water may be confined to the area where fire sprinklers activated to help douse the flames. If, on the other hand, extinguishing a fire requires the assistance of firefighters and a fire hose, your building may experience significant water destruction.

Specific forms of damage may include saturated flooring and drywall as well as soaked electronic equipment and documents. Water saturation can also introduce hazards, including the risk of electric shock and potential mold contamination.

A commercial fire can result in multiple forms of damage. Depending on the amount of destruction, your building may require extensive fire damage cleanup and restoration initiatives. Although no business is immune from a fire threat, recognizing the various forms of destruction that can occur may help you better prepare for a potential blaze.

How To Mitigate Mold After Flooding

11/13/2018 (Permalink)

Mold remediation in a Cascade Place, WA home

Mold may start to grow in as little as 24 to 48 hours immediately following a flood. If your home experiences flooding, you should get rid of standing water, clean, disinfect, and dry the affected area as soon as possible. The following measures may prevent or limit the severity of mold growth.

Eliminate Flood Water

The faster you get flood water out of your home, the less likely mold spores will be to multiply. There are several ways to make your home less inviting for mold:

  • Pump out remaining water
  • Tear out porous contents and building materials
  • Use a wet vac to get rid of any puddles

Once all of the flood water is gone, it is time to clean and disinfect the affected area.

Clean and Disinfect

Flood water is classified as Category Three black water. This means that standing water may contain

  • Bacteria
  • Chemicals
  • Heavy metals
  • Sewage

For this reason, it is necessary to disinfect all surfaces and contents exposed to flood water. Mold also flourishes in undisturbed locations. Cleaning surfaces and eliminating porous contents that cannot be thoroughly cleaned, such as carpet or drywall, will make mold growth less likely.

Dry the Area

The more you can lower moisture levels following a flood, the less likely mold will be to grow. For this reason, homeowners or restoration experts should use equipment such as commercial- or industrial-grade

  • Air movers
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Fans

All of these appliances help to speed up drying. Dehumidifiers are particularly useful for maintaining low moisture levels in the air and drawing dampness out of semi-porous surfaces.

Removing water, cleaning and disinfecting, and drying are all ways to reduce the risk of mold growth. For the fastest mitigation process and less of an opportunity for mold to develop, rely on the professional equipment and extensive experience of residential water and storm damage specialists in Cascade Place,WA.

3 Lint Cleaning Techniques for Preventing a Dryer Fire

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

Protecting your Orchards, WA, home from fires can keep your family and investment safe. Homes fires can have many sources; however, clothes dryers are often the culprit. Lint and dust collect in several parts of the unit and increase the risk of a blaze that could spread quickly. You can lower the risk of a lint fire by using a few daily and weekly cleaning strategies, and most are simple to perform.

1. Clean the Lint Screen and Trap Area

Lint can gather in the dryer’s screen and down in the trap where the filter sits. This could cause a dryer fire because the accumulated lint might be difficult to see, even when the screen is removed. To clean this area, pull the screen out, remove the excess lint and then rinse the part with water. Next, use a slim vacuum attachment to clean the empty trap. Remember to dispose of all the lint carefully.

2. Vacuum Around the Dryer Weekly

Lint and dust can gather behind and under your dryer, increasing the odds of a lint fire. This can be especially dangerous if you have a large family with multiple individuals doing laundry throughout the week. However, you can keep the area clean with weekly vacuuming, which can be especially important if your dryer does not sit flush to the floor.

3. Clean the Exhaust Hose

Cleaning out your dryer’s exhaust hose can keep the unit functioning efficiently and prevent fire damage that could spread to other rooms. Before you begin, unplug the dryer to prevent the risk of electric shock. Vacuum the inside of the hose and use a hook tool to ensure it is completely empty of lint before you reattach it. You can ask a fire damage and restoration service to inspect your dryer if you are unsure about whether your cleaning techniques are effective.

A lint fire can devastate your Orchards,WA, home. Knowing how to maintain your dryer can reduce the risk and may even extend the life of the unit.
